Anne Arundel County Public Schools Website
The school system consists of 78 elementary schools, 19 middle schools and 12 high schools, plus 2 charter schools, 2 applied technology centers, 3 special education centers, 1 alternative high school, 1 middle school learning center, 1 special education regional program, 1 outdoor education center and 1 early education center. Superintendent Kevin Maxwell is in charge of approximately 74,200 students, and 5,600 teachers. It is the 5th largest school system in the nation.

Anne Arundel County Board of Edcuation Member Contacts
The Board of Education meets twice a month during the school year: on the first Wednesday at 10 a.m.; and on the third Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Board of Education, 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis. The 2009-2010 Board President is Ned Carey. All meetings are open to the public and citizen participation is encouraged. Citizens may comment on agenda and non-agenda items, but personnel issues will not be publicly addressed at a Board of Education public meeting.

Anne Arundel County Council Member Contacts
The council is in charge of approving the school system's budget, including specific operations and construction spending. The budget is approved in May of each year. Throughout the year, the council meets on the first and third Mondays at 7:00 p.m. (Sign-up to speak at 6:30 p.m.) During the month of May, each day is a legislative session. The 2009 Council chair is Cathleen Vitale (District 5).

The Maryland General Assembly meets each year for a 90-day session, beginning in January. The 2010 session will be the 427th Session of the General Asssembly. The Assembly has 47 Senators and 141 Delegates elected from 47 legislative districts. Learn How a Bill Becomes a Law.

Maryland PTA publishes a legislative platform describing the position of Maryland PTA on various issues that may (or may not) come before the general assembly. Local units may not advocate in a opposition to the position taken in the platform.

Anne Arundel County School Board Nominating Commission
The SBNC is comprised of 11 members, five of whom are appointed by the governor as representatives of the five legislative districts within Anne Arundel County. The remaining six are appointed as follows: one from the County Executive, one from the Teacher's Association, one each from Annapolis and Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce, one from the County Council of PTAs, Anne Arundel County Community College Board of Trustees; and one from the Association of Education Leaders. Commissioners serve four year terms. The committee's mandate is to select nominees from whom the governor must choose appointments to the Board of Education.
